Safety Department

Evacuation steps and safety measures

A.    Students must evacuate if:

1.      Alarm bell rings

2.      Informed by teacher in class or on duty: e.g. if fire/emergency has caused the electric system to break down: Staff will be sent to all areas of the school with a message to evacuate.

B.     Students must:

  1. Follow teachers’ directions
  2. Move in silence
  3. Move in single line BY THE WALL out of designated exits of building
  4. Students are not to go to the lockers or use the bathrooms
  5. Students must inform staff on duty if they suspect any missing friends
  6. Students must gather at the "back" of the designated area to permit the movement of others along the path with safety
  7. Once in final location, students must remain with their group to facilitate the attendance
  8. Groups of students should be gathered in rows of 5, in a way to allow the teachers to circulate around their groups

C.    During Recess

Should an evacuation occur during a break time, again the alarm/bell will ring continuously in the playground.

  1. Students are to line up in the playground in areas previously designated
  2. Teachers should meet their students in the appropriate places, and check that all students are present
  3. Maintenance staff should proceed to their responsibilities
  4. Staff in charge of the floors should proceed with their duties and make sure all students have evacuated the building and close all doors and windows
  5. Teachers are asked to use their judgment to decide if they need to take charge whether they are assigned or not

What to do in case of earthquakes

If an earthquake strikes, each person must remain calm and take appropriate actions in order to minimize damage.

Action taken for earthquakes

To ensure physical safety

  • Remain calm and move away from furniture and light fixtures
  • Seek shelter under a sturdy desk or table
  • Put out any immediate fires, and shut off the main circuit breaker
  • Secure an escape route
  • Keep the door open to ensure a clear exit
  • Obtain accurate information from TV or radio
 When evacuating
  • Do not rush out of the building, watch out for falling objects
  • Evacuate on foot
  • Carry basic necessities
  • If you are driving, pull over to the side of the road and obtain information from the radio
  • When leaving the car, turn off the engine, leave the key in the ignition and leave the door unlocked
  • Evacuate wearing functional clothing
  • Watch for aftershocks
  • Don’t leave pets behind!

Emergency kit
Prepare basic necessities for living in an evacuation shelter, and keep them easily accessible. The kit should contain important items (cash, ID, etc.), portable radio, flashlight, medical supplies, and other commodities (clothes, towels, etc.), and should be checked on a regular basis.

Create a cooperative system in your neighborhood, with friends and family.
